Unit 2, Ancient Mesopotamia; Lesson 8: Hammurabi code

Note:  TTW= The Teacher Will; TSW= The Students Will; GCR= Google Classroom 

I.  Standard(s):  6.12: Analyze the impact of the introduction of written law in the Code of Hammurabi, and explain its basic principles of justice. 

     A.  Clear Target:  I can analyze and explain the impact of the Code of Hammurabi to include its basic principles of justice.

     B.  Bell Ringer:

          1.  TSW be able to answer the question below based on the previous lesson’s clear target in order to provide Closure for the previous day’s lesson:

          2.  Previous Day’s Clear Target:  I can identify the important achievements of the ancient Mesopotamian societies and the importance of the “Epic of Gilgamesh.”

          3.  Previous Day’s Lesson’s Closure Question: TSW answer the following question(s):  What was the Epic of Gilgamesh, and why is it important to us today?What was the most important invention/scientific discovery of Mesopotamia and why?

               a.  Review:  After the class has answered the question to the best of their ability, TTW assess if there needs to be a review of the previous day’s lesson.  If a review is needed, TTW have the students get out their notes and will review the material with them.

               b.  If no review is needed TTW have the students get ready for today’s lesson.

     C.  Set: TTW lead a discussion on the clear target and or bell ringer to ensure that the students understand it/them.  TTW lead a discussion on the assignment from the day before to ensure understanding.

     D.  Presentation of New Material:  TSW complete a self paced lesson on the Hammurabi Code via Nearpod.  Here is the link for the Nearpod.  Open the link and follow the instructions on the Nearpod.

          1.  Checks For Understanding (CFU):  Answers to the teacher led discussions from above.

          2.  Video in Video N/A

          3.  Simulation:  N/A

     E.  Guided Practice: TTW demonstrate for the students how to: Find and open the document; use the document; turn in the document when completed.  TTW have a student share their screen and demonstrate all of the steps.  TTW assist, and have the class assist the student demonstrator with answering the first question.

    F.  Independent Practice (The assignments are due the next school day): 

1. Complete the Nearpod from the Presentation of New Material section.

2. TSW complete the Google Doc on the Hammurabi Code by creating their own code of at least 10 laws.  In doing so, the students will pretend that they are living in ancient Mesopotamia and will write the laws for that time frame.  Here is the link to the Google Assignment.

     G.  Closure: The Nearpod Quiz.

     Assessment:  Question and answer/Discussions/The guided practice/Closure discussion/Quiz if used/ Exit Ticket if used
