Unit 2, Ancient Mesopotamia; Lesson 7: Writing and Science

Note:  TTW= The Teacher Will; TSW= The Students Will; GCR= Google Classroom 

I.  Standard(s):  6.11: Identify important achievements of the Mesopotamian civilization, including cuneiform, clay tablets. and ziggurats. and identify the “Epic of Gilgamesh” as the oldest written epic.

     A.  Clear Target:  I can identify the important achievements of the ancient Mesopotamian societies and the importance of the “Epic of Gilgamesh.”

    B.  Set: TTW tell some jokes to get everyone in the learning mindset.  TTW also review the classroom/school rules, clear target and discuss the bell ringer.

   C.  Bell Ringer: Complete the quiz over Polytheism.  Here is the link. 

          1.  Review:  After the class has answered the question to the best of their ability, TTW assess if there needs to be a review of the previous day’s lesson.  If a review is needed, TTW have the students get out their notes and will review the material with them.

            2.  If no review is needed TTW have the students get ready for today’s lesson.     

     D.  Presentation of New Material:  TSW watch two videos, one over the Epic of Gilgamesh, and the other over Inventions and Technology.  The links to the videos are in the Independent Practice Section below.

     E.  Guided Practice: TTW demonstrate for the students how to: Find and open the document; use the document; turn in the document when completed.  TTW have a student share their screen and demonstrate all of the steps.  TTW assist, and have the class assist the student demonstrator with answering the first question.

Write in your notebook:  What was the Epic of Gilgamesh, and why is it important to us today?

Write in your notebook:  Thinking in terms of today, and the impact the Mesopotamian inventions have on us today, what was the most important invention/scientific discovery of Mesopotamia and why?

     G.  Closure: TTW have different students answer the questions from the lesson on the next class day.  The question is:  Be prepared to discuss the answers to the questions in the Independent Practice.
