Unit 3, The Renaissance, Lesson 2: Background

I.  Standard(s):

HS.WH.CE.1 Examine effects of the movement of people, cultures, goods, diseases and technologies through established systems of connection, including the Silk Roads, Trans Saharan Trade Routes and Indian Ocean Maritime System between 1300-1450.

HS.WH.CO.1 Assess how inter- and intra-regional interactions shaped the development of empires and cultures in multiple global regions between 1300-1750.

HS.WH.CH.2 Explain continuities and changes within the religion, ideology, science and arts of empires and nation-states in multiple global regions between 1300-1750.

HS.WH.CH.3 Analyze changes and continuities within and among the Indian Ocean Maritime System, Trans-Saharan System and Silk Roads due to technology and the opening of the Atlantic System between 1300-1750.

HS.WH.CE.2 Analyze the political, economic, geographic and social causes and effects of exploration and colonization between 1450-1750.

     A.  Clear Target: I can demonstrate a general understanding of Feudalism in Europe.  I will know that I have it when I can complete an EdPuzzle and a DBQ, both with at least 80% accuracy.

     A.  Day 2, Clear Target: I can demonstrate a general understanding of the background of the Italian Renaissance.  I will know that I have it when I can complete a DBQ, both with at least 80% accuracy.

     B.  Set/Interest Cue: EdPuzzle Video. Bell Ringer and TTW tell some jokes, or ask some riddles to the students in order to get their brains ready for learning.

     C.  Bell Ringer: This is a 2 day lesson!  Day 1: TSW complete a Summary Activity Questionnaire.  Here is the link.

     C.1. Day 2: TSW complete the Feudalism in Europe Review.  Here is the link.

     D.  Vocabulary: TTW review the clear target with the students ensuring understanding of the new terms (if any) and then lead a discussion on the bell ringer to ensure that the students understand the information in the lesson from the class prior.

     E.  Presentation of New Material: TSW complete three activities on their own: An EdPuzzle called Feudal system during the Middle Ages | World History | Khan Academy from their EdPuzzle classroom; “Feudalism in the Middle Ages” DBQ.  This DBQ is located in the Basket of Goodness 2; and the independent practice for Day 1 (Standards Activity Worksheets).

     E.2.  Day 2: TSW take notes on the background of the Renaissance, and then complete the Timeline of the Renaissance, The Medici: Ruling Behind the Scenes DBQ, and work on anything assigned, but not yet finished in their Basket of Goodness 2.  If for any reason (Absences, missed information in class, translation, etc…) TS need to finish their notes, here is a link to the presentation.

     F.  Guided Practice: TTW explain the directions to TS and provide examples that do not answer any of the worksheet questions.  TTW ask a student to explain what they are doing today to ensure understanding.

    G.  Independent Practice (The assignments are due the next school day): 

          1.    Day 1: From the Basket of Goodness 2, complete the “Feudalism in the Middle Ages” DBQ, and the Standards Activity Worksheets.  On these worksheets TSW read each standard, Google the definition of any words that they do not know, and then rewrite the standards in their own words.

          1.a. Day 2: Complete the Timeline of the Renaissance DBQ and The Medici: Ruling Behind the Scenes DBQ from their Basket of Goodness 2.

          2.  Complete the Quizlet: N/A

          3.  Complete the DBQ: N/A

    H.  Closure: TTW answer any questions that TS have and ensure they know what they have to do for classwork/homework.
