Unit 4, Ancient Israel; Lessons 5 and 6: Ancient Israel Breakout Game (The Three Kings)

Note:  TTW= The Teacher Will; TSW= The Students Will; GCR= Google Classroom 

I.  Standard(s):  6.23  Identify the importance of Saul as the first king of Israel, David as the second king who founded Jerusalem as the capital, and Solomon as the third king and built the first temple.

     A.  Clear Target:  I can explain the significance of the: Ten Commandments; three kings of Israel and their accomplishments; and the prophets of Judaism.

     B.  Bell Ringer:

          1.  Previous Day’s Clear Target: I can explain the origins of Judaism, the key historical figures, and the key beliefs of the Israelites.

          2.  Question: Lesson 5: Who were the main historical figures of Israel’s beginnings, and what did they do?  Lesson 6: What are the 10 commandments? Who received them and from where? Why are they significant to us today?

               a.  Review:  After the class has answered the question to the best of their ability, TTW assess if there needs to be a review of the previous day’s lesson.  If a review is needed, TTW have the students get out their notes and will review the material with them.

               b.  If no review is needed TTW have the students get ready for today’s lesson.

     C.  Set: TTW lead a discussion on the clear target and or bell ringer to ensure that the students understand it/them and the previous day’s lesson.

     D.  Presentation of New Material:  TSW open the following presentation on Israel and use it to complete the breakout game in the Independent Practice section.  Here is the presentation: Ancient Israel Interactive Notes

Instructions for the Interactive Notes: 1. TSW select the “Ancient Israel Interactive Notes” link above.  The document will download as a Power Point in the lower left hand portion of the screen.  2. TSW double click the document when the download has completed. The document will open. 3. After the document opens, TSW select “Enable Editing” from the top middle of the screen.  4. TSW select presentation mode from the link in the bottom right corner of the presentation.

          1.  Checks For Understanding (CFU):  Closure Question(s); Independent Practice

          2.  Video in Video N/A

          3.  Simulation:  N/A

     E.  Guided Practice: TTW show the students how to get to the day’s presentation of new material and independent practice; and explain what they are doing to complete the day’s lesson.  TTW then choose a student at random to perform the same tasks.

    F.  Independent Practice (The assignments are due the next school day unless otherwise stated):  TSW open the Google Document and answer the questions by using the presentation that they downloaded in the Presentation of New Material section.  Here is the link to the Google Document.

Make sure that you select the appropriate class and not just join 3rd period.

     G.  Closure:  TSW be able to answer the following question(s) in the next day’s class discussion: Who were the three kings of Israel, and what did they accomplish?
