Unit 3, Ancient Egypt; Lesson 4b: Giza Necropolis

Note:  TTW= The Teacher Will; TSW= The Students Will; GCR= Google Classroom 

I.  Standard(s):  6.18: Analyze the achievements of ancient Egyptian civilization, including: hieroglyphics, papyrus, and the pyramids and Sphinx at Giza.

     A.  Clear Target:  I can Identify, locate, explain the significance and the purpose of  the Sphinx, pyramids, and other structures within the Giza Necropolis.

     B.  Bell Ringer:  TSW will complete the Ancient Egypt Geography Quiz.  They will take the quiz until they get a 100% on it.  Here is the link to the quiz:Ancient Egypt Geography Quiz.

          1.  Question: None

          2.  Previous Day’s Clear Target:  I can identify and locate the major geographical features of ancient Egypt, and explain why the Nile river was so important to the development and continuance of the ancient Egyptian civilization.

               a.  Discussion:  After the students complete the quiz, TSW think about the previous day’s lesson and write down all of the important facts that they can remember about ancient Egypt’s society, civilization, and culture.  TSW write this information in their notebooks and title it “Ancient Egypt’s Geography”

                b.  TSW share this information, and copy down information that they may not have gotten on their own with/from other students.  TSW find partners by: Eye color; shirt color; birth month; or other random ways so that they can share with different people.

     C.  Set: TTW lead a discussion on the clear target and or bell ringer to ensure that the students understand it/them.  TTW determine if a review of the previous day’s lesson is needed based upon the discussion in class.

     D.  Presentation of New Material:  TSW watch a video on Ancient Egypt’s pyramids.  More specifically an EdPuzzle on the Giza Necropolis.  While watching the EdPuzzle video, TSW answer the questions in the EdPuzzle.  Go to ClassLink to get to EdPuzzle.  Once you are in EdPuzzle, go to the bottom of the assignments list in your class and open

          1.  Checks For Understanding (CFU):  EdPuzzle; Giza Map Quiz; Closure Question(s)

          2.  Video in Video N/A

          3.  Simulation:  N/A

     E.  Guided Practice: TTW show the students how to get to the day’s presentation of new material and independent practice; and explain what they are doing to complete the day’s lesson.  TTW then choose a student at random to perform the same tasks.

    F.  Independent Practice (The assignments are due the next school day unless otherwise stated):  TSW will complete the Giza Quiz.  They will take the quiz until they get a 100% on it.  They will take the quiz using the Giza online tour.  TSW review and familiarize themselves with the Giza Necropolis tour information, and answer the quiz questions.  The map can be used during the quiz.  Here is the link to the interactive map:  Giza Tour.  Here is the link to the quiz:  Giza Quiz.

     G.  Closure:  TSW be able to answer the following question(s) in the next day’s class discussion: What Ancient Egyptian advances and achievements can you decipher from the Giza Necropolis?
